The Seal of Biliteracy is an award given upon high school graduation to students who show proficiency in an eligible language other than English.

The Seal of Biliteracy is an award given upon high school graduation to students who show proficiency in an eligible language other than English. Currently, eligible languages for MN’s Seal of Biliteracy program include: Amharic, American Sign Language, Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese (Mandarin), Czech, Dakota, French, German, Hindi, Hebrew, Hmong, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Karen, Korean, Latin, Ojibwe, Oromo, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Somali, Spanish Tamil, Thai, and Vietnamese.
Benefits of the Seal of Biliteracy

Earn college credits at Minnesota State College and Universities (MnSCU). MnSCU does not include the University of Minnesota.

Recognition of students’ bilingual/bicultural or multilingual/multicultural identity

Credential for job and internship opportunities

Recognition on college entrance applications
Eligibility Criteria
Select students in grade 12 that meet any of the following criteria will be invited to test for the Seal of Biliteracy:

A home language eligible for the Seal of Biliteracy

Enrolled in the Spanish Immersion Pathway at Woodbury High School

Currently in a level three or higher language course

Completed a level four language course in the prior school year in grade 11
Students in grade 12 who are proficient in an eligible language or take classes outside of school may also test for the Seal of Biliteracy. Registration is required to participate in testing.
